Assyrians in Yonkers, a Tale of Hope and Survival

Descending from the ancient Assyrian and Babylonian empires, the modern Assyrians are a Christian minority who has faced great persecution in the Middle East. Since the Iraq War of 2003, over a million have fled Iraq and Syria. Assyrians in Yonkers, a Tale of Hope and Survival, curated by Kathy Yacoe and Dr. Ruth Kambar, is an attempt to give this small group a voice and tell its story – to create an awareness of history and the current events that mirror those of the past.

Yonkers has been home to a cohesive Assyrian community since the early 20th century. The theme of this exhibition will be the Assyrian community in Yonkers – who the Assyrians are, their history, present realities and future. Thee exhibition will include archival photographs, artifacts, video, maps, as well as contemporary paintings and sculpture reflecting Assyrian culture, identity, and history. There will also be a series of guest speakers.

One of the highlights of this exhibition will be a large group of archival photographs of Yonkers Assyrian families. They will be paired with a written and oral narrative. Some of the photos will be paired with New York Times articles with dates corresponding to those of the photographs. The exhibition will also deal with SEYFO, the Assyrian Genocide of 1915-1919.
