CELEBRATING DIVERSITY IN WESTCHESTER

 

Live Music is Back! ArtsWestchester in partnership with the City of White Plains, the City of Mount Vernon and Peekskill, the Village of Sleepy Hollow and the Bethany Arts Community. The free events include concerts in parks, staged performances on city streets and an outdoor cultural festival.

 

Bring friends, family, and neighbors throughout the summer for great evnings  of cross-cultural experiences with music and dance from northern Westchester to Southern Westchester and point in between! Travel the world and enjoy evenings fill with the  sounds of raggae, music and dance from the Andes of Peru, ballet folklorico of Mexico, Jamaican and Carribbean folk music, classic American rock-n-roll music, African music & dance, and enjoy a day filled with music, food and dance at the the Ecudorian Festival.

These performances will take place in accordance with New York State and local health department guidelines.

WESTCHESTER & ROCKLAND JUNETEENTH KICK-OFF CELEBRATION

Join us as we come together to kick off a month-long series of Juneteenth activities around Westchester and Rockland Counties! The program features a keynote talk by esteemed urban anthropologist Dr. Sherrill Wilson and reenactment of Harriet Tubman by Alvenia Smith, as well as music and dance performances by regional artists, including Baba Abishai, Selah Armstrong, Shirazette & Black Popped Culture Ensemble, Minister Angel Hill Brooks, and more.

Organized by White Plains Juneteenth Heritage Inc., ArtsWestchester, Peekskill Juneteenth Heritage, the Yonkers African American Heritage Committee, the Haverstraw African American Connection, and the Juneteenth Committees/Councils of Ardsley, Bedford, Greenburgh, Irvington, Mamaroneck, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Ossining and Pelham.

The House and Ballroom community has served as a safe space for LGBTQ+ people across the gender spectrum to explore their identities, expression, and performance. In this discussion, we will deep-dive into the complexity of both the affirmation and work that needs to be done by, and with, the community. As part of the program, Twiggy, Gillette, Milan and Mermaid will present an original runway production specially designed for 2022 Westchester Pride.

 New York’s leading Ghanaian dance and drum ensemble, WUZA-WUZA, is known for its representations of Ghana’s many different ethnic traditions, including the rich diversity of West African music, dance and culture. The ensemble features leading Ghanaian drummers and dancers living in the United States, including world-renowned choreographer Yawuza Alhassan, former Ghana National Dance Ensemble members Mariama Gariba and Esther D. Angel, and master drummers Horla Kutte, Baba Buhari and Kofi Kuube Saeed.
