"A Man Becomes Invisible" a Photo Exhibition

A Man Becomes Invisible is an exploration of Gordon Parks’ photographic interpretation of Ralph Ellison’s National Book Award winning novel Invisible Man. Published in 1952, the novel has been hailed as one of the first to treat the black experience in twentieth-century America as a full human experience. Soon after its publication, Gordon Parks set out to evoke passages from the novel for Life magazine. He staged an actor around Harlem, where both he and Ellison had lived, and recreated poignant scenes from the story; his photoessay titled “A Man Becomes Invisible,” published in the August 25, 1952 issue of Life, introduced Ellison’s novel – and the societal issues it raised - to the magazine’s wide readership.

From the Streets: An Exhibition of Urban Art

Vandals. Artists. Eye-sores. Masterpieces. Depending on the audience, the word “graffiti” earns vastly different labels. Once considered a guerrilla act of vandalism, the graffiti aesthetic is now widely embraced by cities as an impetus of urban renewal and by the art world as a viable movement. Anchored by large-scale mural commissions by some of the best-known American urban artists, “From the Streets” follows graffiti’s stylistic evolution from its genesis as a 1980s youth subculture in the Bronx to its rising prominence in the global art scene. Mixed-media installations, murals and works on canvas will highlight the mastery and diverse practices of today’s street artists. “From the Streets” is an exuberant journey through the evolution of street art that throws a spotlight on urban visual culture now.
