Walkabout Clearwater Coffeehouse Presents: Friend’s of Pete Seeger Night

Saturday, May 18, 2024  —  Friends of Pete Seeger Night

Join a warm and wonderful group of Hudson Valley folksingers as they reminisce and celebrate the music of the legendary Pete Seeger.

Performers that evening will include:   Guthrie’s Ghost: Formed in Beacon NY on what would have been the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie, Guthrie’s Ghost is comprised of three separate entities that combine each year in celebration of the folk traditions that have given us the music of Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and others that followed.  Members include Fred Gillen Jr. (http://www.fredgillenjr.com/)and Steve Kirkman (http://www.stevekirkman.com together called Hope Machine — a duo who were officially endorsed by the Guthrie Foundation 100th Year Celebration, Jacob and David Bernz (http://www.jacobbernz.com/)who perform as a father-son duo (Jacob is one of the valley’s most prolific young songwriters and David is a two time Grammy award winning producer for Pete Seeger.), and Hudson Valley singer/songwriter Julie Corbalis https://juliecorbalis.com/. Together, they offer modern versions of songs from the great folk catalog and original songs in the trajectory.

ARAS: A duo based in the Hudson Valley, Adrien Reju and Andy Stack  – Their name, the couple’s initials, also comes from the word Ara a small southern constellation in the Milky Way known as “the altar”.  The name is apropos to their sound, combining a variety of instruments including electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin, mandola, banjo, piano, and percussion, with close vocal harmonies that echo the soft unison whisper of Simon & Garfunkel and the lilting croons of Graham Parsons and Emmylou Harris. Their live shows feature threads from their individual solo work, songs they’ve written with and for each other, and some select covers, as well as traditional folk and Irish tunes.,

Jackson Pines: Consists of singer-songwriter Joe Makoviecki and stand-up bassist James Black.  Jackson Pines harks forward with with melodies and rhythms from the past.  Combining minimalistic acoustic arrangements and taking cues from the ethos of folk, blues, and indie rock, Jackson Pines tells stories of hard times, overflowing love, disappointment, and hope. In 2017 they released “Purgatory Road” produced by Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers, The Lumineers) and “Lost & Found EP” to critical acclaim.  They have recently been featured in Billboard magazine, on PBS, and on NPR nationwide. Their latest album “Pine Barrens Volume One” was released February 2023.  It is their first album of regional traditional folk songs from the Pines of Jersey, featuring a string band accompanying Joe and James’ signature rhythms and melodies. The songs range from a ballad from 1400AD, 19th century prison songs, love songs, and a Pine Barrens fiddle tune. It was named 2023 Album of the Year by The Aquarian Magazine.
