Enchanted NYC

Upon Arriving in New York City, I always immediately get captivated by the incredible buzz of Big City Life.

I think the best way to explore it is just walking the streets, block by block. And doing just that, while taking numerous photos, got me inspired to start this new series of paintings.

I get mesmerized to realize, looking up at the stunning architecture all around, that life is happening at different levels 24/7 in this City that never sleeps.

As a response to that impression, I use a collage technique to create multifaceted images. The different layers reflect the enchanting effect this historically and culturally fascinating City has.

Different layers of newspaper paper, maps and prints form the basis on the canvas for the lay-out of my work. Using transparent paper for my drawings allows me to blend in several sketches until the design is finished. After partially transferring my final drawing, I start painting in several thin layers of acrylic ink. The details will be worked out at a later stage, and for the final layers I use mixed media, acrylic ink, acrylic paint and other materials.

The limited palette of colors combined with my mixed media technique allows me to express some of my favorite spots in this metropolis inside and out, to give you a glimpse of the charms of different parts of this amazing city, that reveals itself in layers if you look closely enough.
