Opening Reception | Crossing Borders 2023

Join exhibiting artists for a first look at ArtsWestchester’s new exhibition, Crossing Borders Revisited and enjoy special performances by Jomion & The Uklos.

Crossing Borders investigates the experience of immigrating and the act of remembering. Each participating artist utilizes their heritage and artistic practice as a way of keeping their family legacy relevant as they make their own way in a contemporary time and place. Site-responsive installations, sculpture, photography, video, and mixed-media works, including new commissions by Simone Benjamin, Anina Major, and Cheryl Wing-Zi Wong activate ArtsWestchester’s gallery in this timely exhibition, on view through January 14, 2024.

Jomion & The Uklos is a family band from Benin, West Africa, that combines traditional rhythms and songs from their country culture with reggae, salsa and jazz to create vibrant, relaxed dance music, they named Whedo-jazz. They are based in Brooklyn, NYC and are currently teaching West African Drumming at Stonybrook University (Long Island). Their openness to other cultures earned them a collaboration with the Brazilian Ensemble of University of Florida. They performed on Lincoln Center Out Doors, La Casita, BBKing in Times Square, Bric TV Show, Music Time in Africa (Voice of America Radio Show) and recorded with the icon of music Bobby McFerrin.
