On Ramps, Off Ramps, and Line Breaks: A Craft talk with Julie E. Bloemeke (via Zoom)
How do poets implement line breaks to establish immediacy and verisimilitude in a poem?  In revision, how does the poet know when end words start to feel self-conscious?  How do poem openings and closings work together to both invite in and send off the reader?  How do line lengths serve to create conversation within the poem?  Join us as we look at a suite of contemporary poems that make us rethink how openings, closings, and line breaks can propel the work forward.  Please bring a notebook and pen; part of our time together will be devoted to a generative exercise designed to experiment with fresh ideas about how lines can work.

Julie E. Bloemeke (she/her/hers) is the 2021 Georgia Author of the Year Finalist for Poetry. Her debut full-length collection Slide to Unlock (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2020) was also chosen as a 2021 Book All Georgians Should Read, one of only two poetry collections selected statewide for the honor. Currently an associate editor for South Carolina Review, she also recently served as co-editor for the Dolly Parton tribute issue of Limp Wrist Magazine and was a finalist for the Telluride Institute’s 2020 Fischer Prize. Her poems, essays, and interviews have appeared in numerous publications including Writer’s Chronicle, Prairie Schooner, Cortland Review, Gulf Coast, EcoTheo Review, South Dakota Review, and others.
