Indelible Music of the Line with Carlie Hoffman (via Zoom)

What makes poetry a form of music? What is the power of the poetic line? This 2-hour craft class will focus on the rhythm of the line in poetry to help students develop the music of their own poems and strengthen their own individual poetic voices. Students will examine closely the use of line breaks, syntax, as well as commonly used metrical feet in formal poetry, particularly the anapest and the dactyl, to generate their own poems that stretch, bend, and play with language to break through to strange, interesting, and indelible sounds in their own poetry.

NB: This class will be taught on Zoom (Sunday, July 21, 12:30-2:30 PM ET) and will be capped at 15 students. Registrants will receive the Zoom link to the email address they use to register. Carlie Hoffman lives in Brooklyn and is the author of one previous collection of poetry, This Alaska (Four Way Books, 2021), winner of the NCPA Gold Award in poetry and a finalist for the Foreword Indies Book of the Year Award. A poet and translator, her honors include a “Discovery” / Boston Review prize and a Poet’s & Writers Amy Award. Carlie is the founder and editor-in-chief of Small Orange Journal.
