Halloweekend & Day of the Dead

Celebrate Halloween with family-friendly activities! On Saturday, decorate mini pumpkins in the HRM Courtyard with a creepy landscape or scene from 1–4pm (for ages 4–12). Then, join our socially distanced costume parades at 1:30 and 3pm! On Sunday, watch The Sky Tonight: Is It Aliens Yet? at 2pm, and enjoy Spooky Storytelling with Tom Lee at 3pm (for ages 8+)! Plus, learn about Victorian mourning practices on tours of our historic home, Glenview, all weekend long.

Day of the Dead, or Día de Muertos, is celebrated on November 1 and 2 in the southern regions of Mexico. November 1st is generally referred to as Día de los Inocentes, or Day of the Innocents, to honor the souls of departed children and infants. November 2nd is Día de Todos Santos, or All Souls Day, when families go to the cemetery to decorate the graves and tombs of their relatives.

Celebrate Día de Muertos all weekend by making a Cempasúchil, or Mexican Marigold, to install on our community altar or take home. You are also invited to place pictures of your departed loved ones on the altar, which will be on view Thursday, October 28 through Sunday, October 31. We recommend bringing copies of pictures that you would like to leave at the Museum. For everyone’s safety, in adherence to CDC and COVID-19 guidelines, photos will be discarded after November 2. Plus, decorate paper skull masks from 1–4pm on Sunday.
