Fall Concert | Salute to Percy Grainger
The Westchester Symphonic Winds (WSW) opens its 34th season on November 14, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. at the Tarrytown Music Hall with a musical salute to Australian composer Percy Grainger. This is a vaccinated patrons only performance, masks required.
In collaboration with the Percy Grainger House Museum, the concert celebrates the 100th anniversary of Grainger’s arrival in White Plains, and 60th anniversary of his death. Works featured on the program include Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy, Molly on the Shore, In a Nutshell, Irish Tune, and Tuscan Serenade, with soloists Erin Dawson and Marc Tartell, euphonium.
Also scheduled on the concert is the world premiere of Joshua Idio’s The Cruise Line Dream in partnership with the And We Were Heard project, supporting the performance of works by underrepresented composers. The composition portrays the excitement of traveling the seas by cruise ship – a method of transportation favored by Percy Grainger throughout his lifetime.
In addition, a Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented during the concert to Joe Greco, former band director at Ardsley High School, for his considerable contributions to the field of music education in Westchester.
