Lecture 3: Erotic or Not? Sex in Art
Jeff Koons was not the first artist to exploit our voyeuristic tendencies! The ancient Romans depicted erotic themes in their statues and murals, Medieval scribes placed sexual drawings in the margins of manuscripts, Renaissance artists found excuses to represent orgies, and Rococco artists satisfied the desires of the aristocracy for titillating imagery. These trends continued into the modern and contemporary eras. Freedman will discuss dozens of artworks that may arouse us – or not!
