Dismantling Coloniality in Travel Writing with Bani Amor via Zoom

Re-examine your approach to travel writing by turning critical analysis into literary praxis with genderqueer travel writer Bani Amor!

After centuries of exposure to travel literature told by a dominant voice, it’s natural for our writing to reflect these perspectives in coded (and not-so-coded) ways. As the genre was born during the onset of colonization by European expansionists, it can seem difficult to distinguish fresh ideas from stale ones, but it can also be liberating. In this workshop, we’ll trace this history within the genre as well as our interpersonal relationships to place in order to identify and then dismantle the dominant narrator within our work and walk away with tools to approach travel writing with passion and realness.

Bani Amor (they/them) is a gender/queer travel writer who explores the relationships between race, place, and power. A four-time VONA/Voices Fellow, their work has appeared in CNN Travel, Fodor’s, AFAR, and Teen Vogue, among other outlets, and in the anthology Outside the XY: Queer Black and Brown Masculinity. Scholarship Notes

There are two free Altman Person of Color Scholarships, and one Need based Scholarship, all given on a first come, first served basis. The limit is one scholarship every other month per student for writers living within the United States. Please let us know right away if your plans change and you are not able to use the scholarship so we can open the seat to another student. Thank you.
