Auditions for The Sisters Rosensweig

YCP TheaterWorks to hold open Auditions for The Sisters Rosensweig

The Sisters Rosensweig

January 8 &10, 2018

The Sisters Rosensweig by Wendy Wasserstein

YCP TheaterWorks to stage Wendy Wasserstein’s Contemporary Classic

Directed by Richard Troiano

This play deals with the three Rosensweig sisters and their friends and families. It is a rich character driven play that is considered one of Wendy Wasserstein’s strongest. The play is set in the London home of the eldest sister, Sara. Most of the characters are from the Eastern portion of the United States (the sisters are from Brooklyn) and therefore that sort of sensibility permeates the play. The three sisters reunite to celebrate Sara’s birthday. It is also a solemn occasion. Their mother recently passed away. Due to her own illness, Sara was unable to visit her mother in America. The family reunion is the first time the three sisters have been together since their mother, Rita Rosensweig died.

Auditions are to be held on January 8 & 10 at 7:00pm at the Shrub Oak United Methodist Church at 1176 East Main Street, Shrub Oak, NY 10588. Performances are scheduled for March 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24 and 25, 2018. For information or questions on the auditions contact the director at 845-596-1920.

Gorgeous Teitelbaum- She is the middle sister. She is in her 40’s-early 50’s. Of the three sisters, she is the most rooted in their Jewish heritage, as well as the most stringent believer in the “American Dream.” In fact, she is the only Rosensweig sister with a permanent residence in America, and can’t quite understand why her sisters have chosen such unconventional paths. In addition to these traits, Gorgeous has some vanity/envy issues. Whenever she is upset, she has a compelling desire to shop for clothes and shoes. At the same time, her fundamental values lie with family. When she is given a gift of an expensive Chanel suit, she decides to return it to the store and use the cash to help pay for her children’s education. She is bright and excited about hosting an upcoming local cable television show.Sara Goode-  In her mid-50s, Sara has attained a successful career in banking. She lives in London and has streaks of independence. She is very proud of her career and success which she secretly hopes her bright seventeen-year-old daughter would attain. She also has a couple of ex-husbands and is not as successful in that part of her life. She is smart, vivacious, and excited about life.

Pfeni Rosensweig- Like Gorgeous and Sara, she is also bright and vivacious. She is also highly adventurous and curious.  She is the youngest. She can be in her late 30’s early 40’s. Pfeni has spent her life journeying around the world, writing travel books. For years, Pfeni has maintained a long-distance relationship with a bisexual man, a successful theater director named Geoffrey Duncan.

Geoffrey Duncan- Close to age as Pfeni (maybe a bit older- 40’s), he is the most colorful and unorthodox character in the play. He is a bisexual theater director who claims to be madly in love with Pfeni. In every scene, he is vibrant and whimsical. Pfeni, who is unconventional in many ways is at first content with this relationship but as things develop their feelings begin to deepen.

Mervyn Kant–  In his 50’s, he is a man who sells fake furs. Mervyn serves as Sara’s romantic foil. He is funny, sociable, smart, down-to-earth. He appreciates traditional values and a “nice Jewish lady.” The more Sara rejects his advances, the more he persists. He believes in traditions but is far from being mired in the past. Although he is a widower, he is ready to move on in his life. Even his profession connotes his affiliation with the old and the new values. He does not plan to alter Sara’s career or family life (the way a traditional husband might); he just wants to find a romantic, loving companion, which he hopes will be Sara.

Nicholas Pym- In his mid-50’s, he is the most British of all the characters in the play. He is a businessman and not as imaginative as the sisters although quite bright and accomplished. He represents capitalism in London.

Tess Goode- At 17 (she could be older-20’s), she is Sara’s daughter. Independent thinking like Sara, Tess is at a stage in life where she is conflicted. Following her mother’s path in business seems fine but so do the interests of Tom and others. She is searching, like everyone, for her own path in life to follow. She is extremely bright, energetic and curious about what the world has to offer.

Tom Valiunus- In his 20’s, Tom is a working-class hero type. He wears boots and a blue streak in his different colored hair. He is from a Lithuanian family and wants to bring attention to the plight of the working class.
