A Tribute to Horace Silver

The New Rochelle Council on the Arts is proud to co-sponsor a special concert honoring an NEA Jazz Master: A Tribute to Horace Silver on Sunday, April 21st at 2 pm at the Ossie Davis Theater at the New Rochelle Public Library.

Inspired by the late pianist Horace Silver, a New Rochelle resident towards the end of his life, New Rochelle musician Jared Pauley organized the concert, which will feature a quartet of Westchester and NYC-based musicians playing compositions from the 1950s through the 1960s.

Silver, an NEA Jazz Master, was described as “the heart of the hard bop era,” helping to form the influential Jazz Messengers and composing many blues and gospel-flavored songs that have become part of the jazz canon, including “Lonely Woman,” “Song For My Father,” “Señor Blues,” “The Preacher,” “Nica’s Dream,” and “Peace.” The NEA noted “His piano playing was heavily rhythmic, driving his musical colleagues to greater heights in their solos.”

This concert is made possible with funding from the New Rochelle Council on the Arts and the New Rochelle Public Library.
