Bavarian Club Westchester Folk Dancers plus
Bavarian Tyrolean Felt Hats and Scherenschnitte Paper Cutting Hands-on Workshops
Free and open to all ages!
Saturday, October 18, 2014, 1:30-3:30PM
Celebrate, learn about, and try your hand at traditional German folk arts at ARToberfest on Saturday, October 18, 2014 from 1:30-3:30PM, a German folk arts celebration with a free dance performance and hands-on art making workshops. ARToberfest is the newest addition to Pelham Art Center’s continuing free Folk Arts Series. The Bavarian Club Westchester Folk Dancers will perform two traditional dances and share the history of both the dance and their traditional outfits. Bring your dancing shoes as the audience will be invited to participate. MaryLouise Gladstone, an art educator well versed in multi-cultural arts, will lead a traditional folk arts workshop in Scherenschnitte paper cutting and Bavarian Tyrolean Felt Hat making. Scherenschnitte, which literally translates to scissor cutting, was developed in the 16th century in Germany and Switzerland. Tyrolean Felt Hats, also known as Alpine hats, are typically worn during the Bavarian 16-day festival known as Oktoberfest. Since 1810, this event has been held annually in Munich from late September until the first weekend in October. Join us for this memorable event!
