Valerie Capers Trio
On Friday, April 17th Roscoe’s Room welcomes the Valerie Capers Trio. Valerie Capers — pianist, composer, singer, and educator — was born in New York City and received her early schooling at the New York Institute for the Education of the Blind in the Bronx. She then continued on to the Juilliard School of Music, becoming the only blind person to complete both a bachelor’s and master’s degree there. For 24 years Dr. Capers was on the faculty of the Department of Music and Art at Bronx Community College (CUNY); she was chairman from 1987 to 1995, and is now professor emeritus. Valerie Capers has performed in clubs and concert halls throughout the country and has appeared with her ensemble in many leading jazz festivals both here and in Europe. She has performed with a roster of outstanding artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Max Roach, Paquito D’Rivera, and Wynton Marsalis, among others. Valerie Capers has recorded several albums with her ensemble and is currently in preparation for her next release. Two shows, 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm; $10 cover charge.
