The Ying Quartet
2016 – 2017 CONCERT SEASON
THE YING QUARTET
Robin Scott, violin Janet Ying, violin Phillip Ying, viola David Ying, cello
The Ying Quartet occupies a position of unique prominence in the classical music world, combining electrifying performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music in today’s world. Now in its second decade as a quartet, the Ying has established itself as an internationally celebrated ensemble playing the world’s most important concert halls; and their belief that concert music can be an integral part of community life has drawn the ensemble to take on unconventional projects and perform in diverse settings. Their much-heralded collaboration with the Turtle Island Quartet won a Grammy Award in 2005, and a collaboration with the Billy Childs Chamber Jazz Ensemble was nominated for a Grammy in 2010. The Ying Quartet’s Dim Sum features music by Chinese-American composers that merges the Western string quartet with the aural world of traditional Chinese music. The Ying maintains full-time faculty positions at The Eastman School of Music, where they are currently Quartet-in-Residence.
