Short Films by Local Filmmakers

Local filmmakers will present three short documentaries that bring awareness to Indigenous peoples’ struggles for social justice and cultural preservation: Akuy Eenda Maawehlaang: The Place Where People Gather (Brooklyn Demme), Magit’s Doll (Ann Verrall), and Silent Tribute (Lorna Rainey, Michele Baldwin, and Oleana Whispering Dove). The films explore challenges facing Indigenous communities today, including efforts to sustain and revitalize their homelands, the haunting legacy of the residential school system, and the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women.

After the screenings, Janeen Houston will moderate a conversation and audience Q&A with Indigenous leaders Magua/Chief Dwaine Perry, Owl, and Grandmother Soaring Hawk and filmmakers Oleana Whispering Dove and Brooklyn Demme. A reception will follow.

This event is presented in partnership with Sweetwater Cultural Center and Truth 2 Power.
