Poetry as Thought, Craft with Sean Singer via Zoom
Stanley Kunitz said that writing poetry is one of the hardest, most life-affirming things a person can do. Taken seriously, it is not a specific repertoire or academic exercise, but a way of life. This six-week craft class will focus on what I’ve learned about poetic craft so far in my life of reading and writing poetry. These are things I tell poets I work with in my editorial services business.
Topics include: Creating poems that appear simultaneously spontaneous, yet inevitable; Thinking thoughts whole; Writing from impulse; Caring about what a line is; Cultivating rhythmical energy; Making the line itself syntactically interesting; Making the language move; Writing with lyricism and truthfulness; Using empathic inquiry; Cultivating psychological sturdiness; Writing without fear; Using form and blank space; Being an active reader; Using poetry to create social change; Staying healthy in a sick world
This class is capped at 12 students. It will take place via Zoom. Zoom link instructions will be emailed at the time of registration. Please check spam filter and email admin@writerscenter.org with questions. Tickets for this 6week class series are $320. Please register at
