New Castle Beginnings – Our Founding Farms
Purchased from the Native American tribes of the Mohegan Confederation, including the Sintsincks, large tracts of land became the first farms and the establishment of Shepequa (Chappaqua), a Native-American word referring to the abundant water sources which made farming possible.
The exhibit showcases our legacy from these Native-Americans through the farming era of the nineteenth century to the large estates and housing development which turned New Castle into a suburban community. Many of the old names have been retained in current roads, parks, and developments.
The exhibit will run through the year.
The hours are Tues, Wed, Thurs & Sat. from 1:00 – 4:00 or by appointment at 914-238-4666.
