For centuries, the sounds of our surroundings, cultures, faiths, relationships, and so much more have served to color, inform, inspire, and define even supposedly abstract musical compositions. Music from Copland House is thrilled to be back in Westchester with this free, hour-long program that features scintillating and intensely communicative works by three of America’s most distinctive, dynamic composers, whose cultural and personal backgrounds span continents. Gabriela Lena Frank’s Hilos (“Threads”) vividly evokes songs, dances, games, and vignettes from her ancestral Peru and its Andean regions. (Click HERE or on the photo above to sample Music from Copland House performing an excerpt from Hilos of an Afro-Peruano dance.) Pierre Jalbert has often pointed to the kind of duality that’s so prominent in his Piano Trio No. 1 as a hallmark of his music: its hyper-energy springing from the drive and intensity of the city, contrasting dramatically with the aching, ethereal beauty and stillness of Catholic Gregorian Chant. And Reena Esmail‘s hypnotic Tasveer (commissioned by Copland House) embraces the worlds of her parental homeland (India), Hindustan singing, and Western classical music.
Music from Copland House’s featured performers are clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein, violinist Curtis Macomber, cellist Caleb van der Swaagh, and pianist Michael Boriskin. We look forward to connecting with old and new friends from Westchester and its surrounding areas … so please join us to hear life!
