“Life Experiences” Paintings by Gail Kolflat at the Harrison Public Library July 2-27, 2018

Harrison Council for the Arts presents “Life Experiences” an exhibition of paintings by artist Gail Kolflat at the Harrison Public Library, Halperin Building, 2 Bruce Avenue, Harrison, NY on view July 2-27.   This exhibit consists of a collection of paintings reflective of the artist’s personal experiences, and as witness to others as observer.  The canvases are colorful social commentaries, executed in oil and acrylic paint.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

“As an artist I find it compelling to create compositions of human society. I’m a painter, and my work consists of singular or multi-panel assemblages, executed with a broad use of color. A spontaneous abstract footprint is in every work, intertwined with figurative representations. Observing and delving into the interplay of shapes, textures and colors was what drew me into the visual arts. I focus on groupings of people – who they are, where they are, why they are there, the ambiance surrounding them collectively as well as individually. Tapestries, textiles, Art Nouveau, modern abstract painting, Impressionism, the human condition and numerous venues in Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City continue to serve as inspiration for my work.”

Born in the Midwest, and raised in Winnetka Illinois, Gail Kolflat earned a BFA with Honors from Parsons School of Design in New York City. Her artistic career blossomed after developing a signature style of large-scale colorful canvases that melded abstract and representational principles.

Through the 1990s, Gail exhibited frequently, gave artist talks and demonstrations, wrote a column for the county art council’s bimonthly newspaper, and maintained a robust studio practice.

At the turn of the century, Gail took a 15-year break from art while raising her daughters.  In 2013, an invitation from a local university to exhibit in their new two-story art gallery sparked a complete revival in the artist’s practice. Since then, she has produced a new body of work, a renewal of earlier work but evolved – encompassing new themes, modified techniques, and a distinct, mature sensibility.  Her recent works portray a bold use of space and color, with themes of social commentary.

The exhibit may be viewed Mondays and Wednesdays 9:30am to 9:00pm; Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays  9:30am to 5:30pm and Saturdays 9:30am to 12:30pm..  For info call the Library 914-835-0324 or see harrisonpl.org.
