Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing
Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing is the premier perfornmance of a song cycle for Soprano and Piano, composed by Pete Malinverni, acclaimed jazz pianist, composer, educator and long time Pound Ridge resident. In celebration of National Poetry Month, Malinverni used the texts of James Weldon Johnson’s poetry. The performance will include, of course, Johnson’s “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing”, known as the African-American National Hymn, as well as a handful of well-known Spirituals.
Joining Malinverni is Soprano Lydia Brown, a talented young artist/recording artist. Lydia Adelle Brown is a classically trained vocalist and multi-instrumentalist from Rochester, New York, who practices music therapy, sound healing, and music composition. After completing her Bachelor’s of Music at SUNY Purchase, she has gone on to work with the Bronx Opera Company, Utopia Opera, and the Berlin Opera Academy. In 2021, she collaborated with composer Michael Torke on the album Psalms and Canticles as featured vocalist. She is currently working on a project with musical group Gone to Color which is set to be released later in the year. Lydia’s passion for music therapy and social justice work have driven her to pursue studies of decolonization and Indigenous healing practices in relation to modern day wellness, which is the topic of her upcoming thesis project within the Master of Science in Creative Arts Therapy program at Nazareth University in Rochester.
You won’t want to miss this exciting premier performance! Be prepared to enjoy an amazing musical experience.
