La Carmencita: Tango Night at the Opera (Amphitheater 2024)

In collaboration with the Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet, the Opera Next Door presents a unique twist on the timeless opera Carmen by Georges Bizet. A condensed, tango adaptation sung in French, this 90-minute piece, directed by Rebecca Miller Kratzen, is set in a taberna in Buenos Aires, where passion, jealousy, fate, and hope unfold as protagonist Carmencita takes control over her destiny.

Born out of stoop concerts presented in Brooklyn during the pandemic summer of 2020, The Opera Next Door was created by Colombian soprano Sasha Gutérrez to help fill a gap left in the artistic world by the loss of live concerts, particularly opera productions. It continues as an independent opera company based in Brooklyn that focuses on fostering community through the magic of opera.

Latin Grammy Award–winning Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet is one of the most compelling tango ensembles on the scene today. Originally debuted at Lincoln Center in 2015, Giraudo’s collective finds inspiration in the legacy of tango nuevo icon Astor Piazzolla, American jazz, and European classical traditions. Described by Downbeat Magazine as “an opulent listening experience,” their exciting, contemporary sound returns to the HRM Amphitheater for a uniquely collaborative tango night at the opera!

This program is part of the 2024 Summer Amphitheater Series. Doors open at 7:30pm. No reservations required. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Free parking is available.
