Hudson Valley Music Club presents Virtuoso Trio
On November 25, at 1:00 PM, the Hudson Valley Music Club will present a virtuoso string trio consisting of: Ida Kavafian, violin; Steven Tenenbom, viola; and Peter Wiley, cello. They will perform J.S Bach’s Contrapunctus VIII from The Art of the Fugue 7, Jean Françaix’ String Trio in C, and Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9, No. 1 in G. This ensemble has performed wonderful concerts for the music club in the past and we are excited to welcome them again.
Ida Kavafian
Ida Kavafian enjoys an international reputation as one of the most versatile musicians performing today. With a repertoire as diverse as her talents, Ms. Kavafian has electrified stages as a recitalist as well as a soloist with major orchestras across the globe. For over 25 years, Ms. Kavafian has been the artistic director of the highly successful festival, Music from Angel Fire, in New Mexico. A graduate of Juilliard studying with Oscar Shumsky, she made her NY debut under Young Concert Artists.
She formed the ensemble Opus One with pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, violist Steven Tenenbom and cellist Peter Wiley, which recently commissioned and premiered a new works by George Tsontakis, Marc Neikrug, Lowell Liebermann and Stephen Hartke. Opus One will be performing some of these works at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s New Music series on February 11.
Steven Tenenbom
Violist Steven Tenenbom has established a distinguished career as a chamber musician, soloist, recitalist and teacher. He has worked with composer Lukas Foss and jazz artist Chick Corea, and appeared as guest artist with such eminent ensembles as the Guarneri and Emerson String Quartets, the Beaux Arts and Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trios, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He has performed as soloist with the Utah Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic and Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, and toured with the Brandenburg Ensemble throughout the United States and Japan. His festival credits include Mostly Mozart, Aspen, Ravinia, Marlboro, June Music Festival, Chamber Music Northwest, Music from Angel Fire, and Bravo! Colorado. A recipient of the prestigious Coleman Chamber Music award and a former member of the Galimir Quartet, he is currently a member of the renowned group TASHI and the piano quartet OPUS ONE. Mr. Tenenbom is on the faculties of The Curtis Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, The Bard College Conservatory of Music and New York’s Mannes College of Music.
Peter Wiley
Cellist Peter Wiley enjoys a prolific career as a performer and teacher. He is a member of the piano quartet, Opus One, a group he co-founded in 1998 with pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, violinist Ida Kavafian and violist Steven Tenenbom. Mr. Wiley attended the Curtis Institute of Music as a student of David Soyer. He joined the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1974. The following year he was appointed principal cellist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for eight years. From 1987 through 1998, Mr. Wiley was cellist of the Beaux Arts Trio. In 2001, he succeeded his mentor, David Soyer, as cellist of the Guarneri Quartet. The quartet retired from the concert stage in 2009. He has been awarded an Avery Fischer Career Grant, nominated for a Grammy Award in 1998 with the Beaux Arts Trio and in 2009 with the Guarneri Quartet. Mr. Wiley participates in leading festivals including Music from Angel Fire, Chamber Music Northwest, OK Mozart, Santa Fe, Bravo!, and Bridgehampton. He continues his long association with the Marlboro Music Festival, dating back to 1971.
