A Choreography Showcase

Celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Steffi Nossen School of Dance, the STeffi Nossen Dance Foundation will present acurated collection of dance works. Featured wsill be the work of emerging and established choreographers and a post-performance Q&A. Performing are professional artists from Westchester and the tristate area – both new and familiar artists will be seen. Included is the work of present and former Steffi Nossen faculty members.
North Salem Choreographer and dance educator <strongJessica DiMauro Marks, Artistic Director of the Steffi Nossen Dance Foundation, is the showcase producer and will be represented on the program by two works. A Steffi Nossen alumna, her work has been shown at venues throughout the area. Her company, DiMauro Dance has been selected to perform at numerous festivals and curated showcases including White Wave’s COOL NY Dance Festival, and The HATCH. Ms. DiMauro is on the dance faculty of Montclair State College.

Other featured professional companies performing include Verlezza Dance, Project 44, Tracie Stanfield’s SynthesisDANCE, Erin Dilion & Dancers, and ColeLateral Movement Collective.
Sabatino Verlezza (Verlezza Dance) will show “Tobi Roppo”, danced by members of Raoul Dance NY. Christina Pandolfo said.in danceworld.com. on the piece’s performance in the American Dance Guild in September, “Sabatino Verlezza’s ‘Tobi Roppo’ set the stage on fire, weaving an incredible thread between vintage and futuristic. Performed by RIOULT Dance NY, the piece’s sharpness brought the piece’s sharpness brought definition and crispness to the stage, as the dancers’ impeccable technique reigned supreme.”

Gierre Godley is Artistic Director of PROJECT 44, an all-male company that has toured work throughout the United States and Europe. They will present “Christopher”. Cecly Placenti in Critical Dance” said that the work “showcases the raw athleticism and primal passion of male dancing. Full of sinuous partnering, web-like interactions and symbiotic relationships; …a feast for the eyes.” at its June 2017 New York City premiere.
Tracie Stanfield’s company SynthesisDANCE will show “Opposite of Thieves” a high-energy evening-length lyrical female trio. Her works connect with audiences through their accessibility, wit, musicality, and human-scale drama. Britain’s Huffington Post said of her work “Tracie Stanfield, thrilled and mesmerised with their versatility, their musicality, their masterful fusion of classical and contemporary forms and their combination of integrity and intellectual rigour on the one hand – or foot – and sharp instinct for entertaining on the other.” EXPLOREDANCE.COM said, “The graceful choreography was a pleasure to watch and the dancers’ execution was brilliant.” LA TIMES: “Secure professionalism…strongly choreographed…” “Secure professionalism…strongly choreographed…” JAZZ DANCE E NEWS said of her, “An innovative voice in the ever expanding form of concert jazz dance.”

Dani Cole will show “land gone”, an investigation of the ironies of freedom. Drawing from unconventional depictions of the Statue of Liberty, “land gone” investigates the ironies of freedom. How is freedom, the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance, dually actualized and not actualized among democratic and societal structures? How can the dancing body, seemingly bound by physical limitations, socialization, and self-restraint, recognize parameters and work towards open engagement with movement, the self, and others in the space?

Erin Dillon & Dancers will present “quiet here,” a glimpse into a relationship and its intricacies: two people are stuck in a cyclical pattern of which they both know there is no way out. It is now a matter of being able to hold on to themselves and their identity and pick up the pieces of the people they used to be. “the dancers exploded onto the stage with a striking balance of power and fluid movement.”

Two pre-professional dance companies, The Steffi Nossen Dance Company and the Paul Taylor Teen Ensemble will share the stage with their professional counterparts.

The Steffi Nossen dancers will perform an excerpt from Annie Doss’ “Maidenform” and the premiere of a new work by Matthew James. Choreographer Paul Taylor’s iconic “Airs: will be performed by he Paul Taylor Teen Ensemble.

Annie Doss, a native of Pleasantville, grew up in the Steffi Nossen School of Dance where she currently teaches and choreographs. Matthew James is a member of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, a tribe located in Santa Ynez, CA and has been heavily influenced by the tribal elements of inclusion, community, teamwork, cooperation, and contribution that he believes is a strong necessity in creative artmaking.

Dancemaker Paul Taylor, one of the seminal artists of the 20th and 21st Centuries, continues to shape the homegrown American art of modern dance. The Paul Taylor Teen Ensemble, directed by Raegan Wood, offers teenagers an opportunity to learn more about Mr. Taylor’s work and his place in dance history.
Ms. DiMauro will wrap up the program with an always lively Q&A with choreographers, dancers and audience members.
