A NARRATIVE: An Exhibition

A joyous exhibition opens at Recologie, 49 Lawton Street, New Rochelle, NY, just in time for the holidays. Three women with an abundance of imagination will be exhibiting their work through January 24, 2014. The Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12pm – 7pm for daily viewing. The opening reception is Saturday, November 22, from 5-7pm Working in layers, technically, intellectually and spiritually Alice Harrison creates images and sensations of movement, color, harmony and joy. Much of her work is inspired by the various materials she has collected, as well as by traditional materials in her studio. Alice’s creative process is intuitive – starting with materials and/or marks that she makes, she puts things together – sometimes pieces that seem not to go together. The result is work that has a former life revitalized with new materials. Her work encompasses a variety of mediums – oil, acrylic, water, prints, found papers and objects, image transfer and encaustic. In each artwork there may be one medium, two or many media combined in one piece. Inspiration comes from the inside – based on her personal distillation of the external world. Alice is listed in Who’s Who in American Art and in Outstanding Arts and Designers of the 20th Century, published in England. She co-authored and published Artists’ Guidebook to a New Creative Life. Ellen Highsmith Silver’s exotic Floor Quits which are fabric decoupage on canvas came into being as a way of reconciling the conflict between the desire for colorful, durable floor coverings and the arrival of a new puppy who stubbornly and adorably insisted that the corners of all area rugs were convenient chew toys. She claims absolutely that “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” and the resulting Floor Quilts and their fabric decoupage spin-offs are a logical and rewarding design medium. The somewhat exotic cloths are durable and eye-catching, wear resistant and fully engaging. Tinka Deneberg’s box sculptures begin with found objects which suggest an image and a narrative. Because the objects had another role in their past lives the result is the sense of time past. They are whimsical, thoughtful, confronting and serious all at once. The boxes tell a story: some obvious tales and others the viewer concocts upon viewing. Tinka has been a lifelong artist. A graduate of the University of Minnesota and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, she has taught in public, private and museum schools and founded a Children’s Art Workshop. She has exhibited locally, nationally, and in New York galleries. During the reception you will experience the music of Charles Hipser, a New Rochelle regular at Recologie who will share his exceptional musical talents with you.
