“Sur-Fis Elements X 3” Virtual Exhibition by Maria Santino Cisneros, Julie Cousens and Judith Weber

Surface texture and materials are explored by three diverse artists with distinctive artistic points of view.  The expressions explored through Photography, Fiber and Mixed-Media speak directly about their world view as seen through the details of the varied elements used to create their work.

My work is inspired by nature. My initial medium was collage. By layering canvas with paper and preserved botanicals I was able to produce multi-dimensional and uniquely textural pieces. Longing to expand my versatility as an artist and responding to the wonderfully flexible properties of fiber, I began combining silk, wool, and other natural materials creating unique fiber art and wearable designs. I began utilizing nuno-felting and wet-felting techniques and adding texture by applying the Japanese method of hand-tying and dyeing called “Shibori”.  Each fabric piece is produced by layering strands of fiber and applying soap and water and agitation.

I love having the ability to manipulate the medium resulting in such unexpected outcomes as well as the versatility of surface design that fiber offers.  It allows me, as an artist to produce textural wall art, vessels, apparel, accessories and so much more.

Having been a photographer for many years I am now exploring my skill as an abstract artist using my digital camera as my medium.  I am always learning and growing and pushing my work   to new limits.  My key focus is on light, contrast, composition and a passion for detail.  My work has been exhibited at the Yonkers Riverfront Library Gallery, The Blue Door Art Center, Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site and in private collections.  Currently my work is featured at the Big aLICe Barrel Room in Brooklyn and at the Kittay Gallery by the Garden, in the Bronx, for the Winter 2020 Exhibit and Women’s History Month.

Motivated by the relationship between form and function, image, and actuality, I have spent most of my professional life as a ceramic artist designing and creating a line of limited-edition dining accessories. My work has been featured in multiple magazines including Tableware Today, Gourmet Magazine, Architectural Digest and Martha Stewart Living. I have been represented at Museum shops throughout the United States including SFMOMA in San Francisco, the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC and the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. From 2001 to 2008 I was a Consulting Designer for Dansk International.      As an artist who thrives on challenge and diversity, beginning in 2018 I started to explore works on paper inspired by my work with ceramic tile. Using a variety of media and creative approaches my work is an abstraction of my experience both actual and imaginary.  I paint and print what I feel in the moment. Particularly inspired by the possibilities presented by exploring texture and surface treatments, my work becomes layered with personal meaning, images, color, and complex mediums that seek to draw in the viewer and hopefully connect with my message.
