Stavisky

From money laundering to influence-peddling, casino gambling to dabbling in controversial politics, the life of Serge Alexandre (the late Jean-Paul Belmondo, Breathless, Le Doulos), a.k.a. Stavisky, flashes before our eyes as we see the making (and unmaking) of the theatrically charming con man who made turn-of-the-century France his playground. Belmondo, who we lost last September, turned in a stellar lead performance in this film, the only time he ever worked with the great Alain Resnais (Hiroshima Mon Amour, Providence). “Theatrically charming” would also be a great way to describe this score; Stavisky was the first of only two films to have its music composed by the late Stephen Sondheim.
