Little Rock of the North

Little Rock of the North Debuts Friday, February 28th

Original play reminds us of a slice of New Rochelle history

On Friday, February 28th at 8 pm Tutti Bravi Productions, Inc. presents Little Rock of the North, an original play about the desegregation of Lincoln School in New Rochelle, an event that drew national attention in the 1960s. Written by Julienne Hairston and directed by Billie Tucker, the play is a collaboration between Tutti Bravi and the Lincoln Park Conservancy, the New Rochelle Council on the Arts, Arts Westchester and the Remington Boys & Girls Club.

Little Rock of the North will be presented on Friday, February 28, 2020 at 8:00 pm at the Remington Boys & Girls Club, 116 Guion Place, New Rochelle (parking lot entrance in back on Prince Street). Tickets available at door: $10 general admission, $8 seniors, $2 students

This play is based on the federal court case of 1961, Taylor vs. the Board of Education, in which the African-American parents of Lincoln Elementary School brought a desegregation suit against the New Rochelle Board of Education, claiming that its policy of continually gerrymandering the school’s district lines effectively created a de facto segregated school. That court case was won by the citizens and appealed three times by the Board of Ed. Finally admitting defeat, the school board reacted by tearing down the school and busing the students to other city schools.
