Drawing & Dry Throwing
Ayumi Horie has developed a unique approach—dry throwing—that chronicles the history of each pot’s creation while simultaneously celebrating the idiosyncrasies of clay. Ayumi says “This method allows me to preserve the inherent textures in clay that I love- the stretching, cracking, and sagging.” Inspired by a variety of aesthetics, from Mingei, to anime, to old New England, Ayumi combines this construction process with drawings of animal characters on the slip-covered pots. In this one-day demonstration workshop, Ayumi will present her process, discuss her relationship with pots and materials, and discuss the life of a contemporary studio potter.
