Videofreex: The Art of Guerrilla Television

The Videofreex were a pioneering collective of creative young people who used the brand-new technology of portable video to tell the world about the social changes of the 1960s and ’70s. (They recorded Abbie Hoffman, for example, as well as Black Panther Fred Hampton, just months before his murder.) At a time when the three big networks ruled the TV airwaves, the Videofreex aired their unique footage in a way that became a model for public access stations across the country, and an inspiration for a new generation of artists and activists using social media. We’ll show some of the group’s videos as well as excerpts from Here Come the Videofreex, a work-in- progress documentary.
