Antics Dance – Illuminated Manuscript
Through the art of street dance and multimedia theater performance, this company blurs
the lines between the past and present with its vibrant interpretation of The Epic of Gilgamesh. Ten dancers portray key characters from this ancient Mesopotamian poem, which follows King Gilgamesh as he struggles to reconcile with mortality and understand the meaning of life. Divided into eleven chapters that correspond to the clay tablets from the original poem, Illuminated Manuscript features a fusion of dance genres in its collaborative “urban street” choreography, with graffiti art video projections of original artwork by one of the troupe’s dancers. “Reclaiming hip hop by expanding the idiom’s creative horizons,” (Lewis Segal, The Los Angeles Times) this performance appeals to the “dance warriors and cultural explorers” in us all!
