A Choreography Showcase: A Curated Collection of Dance Works

Featuring the work of emerging and established choreographers selected by audition and commissioned by the Foundation; it brings together notable professional choreographers, artists, and pre-professional dancers from across the region. This event celebrates innovative work in a culturally rich and inspiring performance. Work shown reflects the international origins of several choreographers whose backgrounds range from Japan to Norway and the Balkan states.

Join the conversation in a post-performance Q&A with the artists, a great opportunity for audience members to engage with the artists and gain insight into their creative process, first-hand, while offering artists feedback from audience perceptions of the work.

The Steffi Nossen Dance Foundation has commissioned Kaley Pruitt and McKenzie Brewer to create new work. Kaley will present “Delightful Obsession” exposing the creative process from the viewpoint of the artist; it is being set on the Steffi Nossen Dance Company. McKenzie is working with the Steffi Nossen Dance Theater Workshop on “Curated Chaos “ to be premiered on the program.

Some of the auditioned works included are:

  • Ingeborg Kolstad brings BERGTATT (Spellbound) to the event. Ingeborg, from Norway, brings her Nordic heritage to the NYC dance scene. She is a graduate from Marymount Manhattan College with a BA in Dance, and has experience from stage, commercials, and television.
  • Richard Sayama, a native of Hawaii, will show a duet inspired by the Japanese kanji character for “human being”, which bears the appearance of one person leaning on another. The work encourages the dancers to revisit the innocence of play, the dancers supporting and balancing each other, interweaving their movements and trading who supports whom throughout the piece.
  • Tina Croll + Company will bring two sections of “Balkan Dreams” Balkan Dreams using contemporary dance and Balkan folk dance to explore the great variety of moods and energies found in the traditional music of, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Rumania.
  • Teresa Fallion’s company, Body Stories will present p u r p l e f l a m e, a work that explores the strength of human resilience through the perspective of an individual and of a community more broadly. Since 2005, Fellion’s company has presented work world-wide, employing dance, live music, and theater with social justice.
  • Alexandra Bilodeau, a Steffi Nossen faculty member, has created a upbeat, fast-paced, and energetic duet using humor and comedy incorporating jazz elements. Alexandra holds an MA in Dance from Sarah Lawrence.

We hope you can experience this exhilarating afternoon of new dance with us.
