The Moth StorySLAM in New Rochelle

The acclaimed Moth Story Hour returns to New Rochelle for ArtsFest on Friday, October 18th. The Moth will alight at Trinity St. Paul Parish Hall (311 Huguenot Street, New Rochelle) with one of its popular Story SLAMs – a live, open mic storytelling competition in which anyone can sign up to share a five-minute story on the night’s theme: Ten lucky audience members, picked at random, vie for the chance to be crowned the night’s StorySLAM champion.

This year the story prompt is “Hope”: Aspiring storyteller are asked to “Prepare a five-minute story about HOPE:  Unwavering optimism in the face of uncertainty. Tales of resilience and perseverance. A dream come true! Wants, desires, and aspirations. He loves me! I’ll get the job! That stain isn’t that noticeable! and other sunny affirmations. Celebrating the human spirit’s ability to find light in darkness, against all odds.”

Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the show starts at 7 pm. This is a ticketed event with limited seating (last year was sold out) so advance registration is a must: Tickets cost $15 (plus $2.50 handling charge) and all sales are final. Note that seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis so please be sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before the show. Admission is not guaranteed for late arrivals.  As many as 10 tickets may be available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Moth Radio Hour started as a live storytelling event in 1997, evolving over time into a Peabody Award-winning radio program airing on 570 stations nationwide and a weekly podcast that is downloaded over 100 million times each year. The appeal of the Moth is simple: It showcases true stories, told live and without notes, that illuminate both the diversity and commonality of human experience. How popular is it? Last year was the FIRST time The Moth had held one of its events in lower Westchester and tickets sold out two weeks before the show!
