William H. Macy (Boogie Nights) plays a miserable car salesman in desperate financial trouble who hires two small-time criminals (Steve Buscemi, Reservoir Dogs, and Peter Stormare, The Big Lebowski) to kidnap his own wife. The ransom-as-income scheme collapses when the crooks shoot a state trooper and two innocent bystanders, drawing the local police chief (Frances McDormand, Blood Simple) into her first homicide investigation.
