1959: The Year That Changed Jazz

|

Live Performance by the Benny Benack III Quartet

The year 1959 was a revolutionary one for jazz, with four groundbreaking albums released by four masters of the form: Miles Davis (Kind of Blue), Dave Brubeck (Time Out), Charles Mingus (Mingus Ah Um), and Ornette Coleman (The Shape of Jazz to Come). Filmmaker Bernays takes us back to that pivotal year, building his story around the albums through fascinating footage of the jazz men in the studio and onstage and interviews with Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman, Lou Reed, Sue Mingus, Herbie Hancock, and others.
