Yonkers Philharmonic – From the New World
The Yonkers Philharmonic opens its 2019-20 season with Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3, with Westchester’s own Alan Murray as piano soloist, and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”
These two pieces are some of the most accessible classical music for newcomers and some of the most beloved for experienced concert goers. Dvorak wove American music into his work and inspired by black spirituals, came up with a bittersweet melody that would become a spiritual of its own: the “Largo,” the symphony’s second movement, a kind of song without words scored for the English horn.
Prokofiev’s Third Piano concert is one of the half dozen or so most popular piano concertos of the entire twentieth century. It is famously difficult for the dexterity and stamina it requires of the soloist. If Impressionism in art speaks to you so will Prokofiev.
Alan Murray has appeared extensively in solo and chamber recitals and as concerto soloist with orchestra.He resides in Westchester County with his family, where they also own and operate Galápagos Books, a bookstore specializing in world languages and literature, cultural materials and children’s literature.
