Year of Your Book: Fiction with Kirsten Bakis via Zoom

This a 6-week class meeting Wednesdays 10:15am-12:15pm starting Wednesday September 16 and ending on October 21 (with a makeup date of October 28). This class will be taught online via Zoom.

How long have you been saying you want to write a book? How much longer do you have to wait? Whether you have a partial draft, or just an idea and the desire to write, this class can help you reach that goal. In-class work will hone specific skills such as dialogue, scene construction, plot and structure; generative exercises will help you reconnect with your sense of creative play; deadlines and serious critique will keep you on track throughout the year. The goal is a solid draft, with the instructor and fellow writers supporting and cheering you along the way.

Instructor Kirsten Bakis‘s novel Lives of the Monster Dogs was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, won a Bram Stoker Award, was shortlisted for Britain’s prestigious Baily’s Prize, and has a band named after it. A special 20th anniversary edition came out in 2017, with an introduction by Jeff VanderMeer. Bakis is the recipient of a Whiting Award, a Michener/Copernicus Society of America grant, and a Teaching/Writing Fellowship from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She’s currently at work on a novel, is an editor-at-large for the literary journal Origins, and has been a member of the resident faculty at the Yale Summer Conference since it began. The Atlantic featured The Lives of the Monster Dogs on the occasion of its 20th Anniversary.
