Voices of Poetry at HVWC (Via Zoom)

Join us for an afternoon of exceptional poetry and music, featuring a quarter of award-winning poets. After the readings, we will have a Q&A. You may submit questions before the event to jennifer@writerscenter.org, or ask them at the time of the Q&A. This reading is free and capped at 500. Donations (towards the poets’ honoraria) are encouraged and appreciated.

Nicole Callihan writes poems, stories and essays. Her work has appeared, or is forthcoming in, among others, American Poetry Review, Painted Bride Quarterly, Tin House, Copper Nickel, Plume, and as a Poem-a-Day feature from the Academy of American Poets. Her books include the 2012 nonfiction Henry River Mill Village which she wrote with Ruby Young Kellar and which documented the rise and fall of a tiny mill village turned ghost town in North Carolina, as well as, SuperLoop, a collection of poems published in early 2014. In 2015, she received, with Zoë Ryder White, the Baltic Writing Residency Chapbook Contest Award for their chapbook A Study in Spring which was released by Rabbit Catastrophe Press in fall 2015. Her book, The Deeply Flawed Human, was released by Deadly Chaps Press in summer 2016; in summer 2017, Finishing Line Press published Downtown; in Spring, 2018 Aging was released by YES Poetry, and, in summer 2018, Translucence, a dual-language, cross-culture collaboration with Palestinian poet Samar Jaber Abdel was published by Indolent Books. The Couples, her novella, was published in summer 2019 from Mason Jar Press. Her latest project, ELSEWHERE, another collaboration with Zoë Ryder White, won the 2019 Sixth Finch Chapbook Prize and will be released in spring 2020. The Assistant Director and a Senior Language Lecturer at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering, Nicole frequently collaborates with artists and actors throughout New York City. Tina Cane was born in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC in 1969 and grew up in the city’s East and West Village. She attended the University of Vermont, the Sorbonne and completed her master’s degree in French Literature at ​the University of Paris IX-Nanterre and Middlebury College. She is the founder and director of Writers-in- the-Schools, RI, for which she works as a visiting poet, and is also an instructor with the writing community, Frequency Providence. Over the past twenty years, Tina has taught French, English, and creative writ-ing in public and private schools throughout New York City and Rhode Island.Her poems and translations have appeared ​in numerous publications, including Spinning Jenny, The Literary Review, Two Serious Ladies and Tupelo Quarterly. Tina Cane was the 2016 recipient for the Fellowship Merit Award in Poetry from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. She currently serves as the Poet Laureate of Rhode Island where she lives with her husband and their three children. In 2020, Cane was named

Elizabeth T. Gray, Jr. is a poet, and a translator of Persian and Tibetan literature. Her long poem Salient, which draws on British World War I military materials and Tibetan rituals of protective magic, was published by New Directions in May 2020. Her book-length sequence of poems, SERIES | INDIA, was published by Four Way Books in April 2015. Other work has appeared in The Paris Review, Little Star, Talisman, Paris Lit Up, Hyperallergic, Dispatches from the Poetry Wars, Best New Poets 2012, Poetry International, The Harvard Review, The New Orleans Review, The New England Review and other publications. The Process Series, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, selected poems from SALIENT for the development of GEOMANCY, a multi-media performance in February 2015. She has served as a Guest Editor for Epiphany magazine and for The New Haven Review, and as a consultant to and Board member of various literary journals and organizations. Michael Klein is a Lambda literary award-winning fiction writer & poet. He teaches in the MFA Program at Goddard College in Vermont and Hunter College in New York City. His fourth and third books of poetry, When I Was a Twin (2015) and The Talking Day (2013), were both published by Sibling Rivalry Press. His writing has appeared in Ploughshares, Poetry, and Oxford American. He is the author of two memoirs: Track Conditions (Persea Books, 1997), on his experience with Kentucky Derby winner, Swale, and The End of Being Known (University of Wisconsin Press, 2003), a book of essays exploring friendship and sexuality.
