totemic17 presents “Mapping Symmetries” a woodcut exhibition
On View: September 20 – October 18, 2020
Totemic17 presents Mapping Symmetries, a woodcut exhibition of layered colors from lines cared by paired strangers during 17 hikes into the Rockefeller Preserve at Rockefeller State Park.
Jeff White sponsored 17 excursions throughout the 2000+ acres of the Preserve’s carriage paths where strangers were paired to hike, lunch and participate by taking up to one hour to carve a line into their provided block of plywood. White would later roll ink onto the blocks and print their impressions on top of one another, creating unpredictable documents that delight in happenstance.
Each woodcut in the exhibition has a like-sized, photo-based image with information about the day.
When hikes were suspended for social distancing reasons, White took exhibition curator Audrey Leed’s suggestion and drew inspiration from the Preserve’s blooming Japanese tree peonies. A mini-series of the resulting reduction woodcuts accompany this project.
Social distancing is REQUIRED, as are face coverings at all times while in the gallery.
