Hummel: Piano Quintet in E-flat Minor

Vaughan Williams: Piano Quintet in C Minor

The typical piano quintet features a string quartet (two violins, viola, cello) with piano. Hummel decided to replace one of the violins with a double bass, adding warmth and power to the sound. It convinced Schubert to do the same for his famed Trout Quintet. The Vaughan Williams quintet debuted in 1905, yet was not performed a second time until 1995 because the composer was so discontented with it, he “embargoed” it. Today it is one of the most beloved and admired works in the chamber music repertoire.
