The Wide World: Master class in literary translation (all genres) with Sarah Arvio

You know those spells when you have nothing to say but you long to write—something? You miss the feel of the pen moving across the page? Translating is a beautiful and intriguing way of deepening your writing skills while waiting for your own voice to return to you. But the art of translation also makes a formidable contribution to our literary culture. Think of it as a form of impersonation, of ventriloquism, of paint-by-number, of re-invention and re-creation. Do you want to try your hand? In this master class, we will work from any language into English, and in any literary genre. All language skill levels are welcome. Sarah Arvio is the author of night thoughts: 70 dream poems & notes from an analysis (2013), Sono: cantos (2006), and Visits from the Seventh (2002), for which she won the Rome Prize of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. All three books are published by Alfred A. Knopf. Her translations of poems and a play by Federico García Lorca, Poet in Spain, was published by Knopf in 2017, to wide critical acclaim. Arvio is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Bogliasco Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She has won prizes for her work from Boston Review, The Paris Review, and Poetry. For many years a translator for the United Nations, she has also taught poetry at Princeton. She lives in New York City.
