The Style and Aesthetics of Caravaggio and Raphael

Raphael, another of the 16th century’s universal artists, was a master at creating harmonious compositions in which colors, while beautiful, were secondary to the clarity of form and flowing lines. Caravaggio, the most influential painter of the Early Baroque period, and the artist who established tenebrism (the bright illumination of a scene out of darkness) as a common feature of Baroque painting. They work and style will be compared and analyzed for a deeper appreciation of each artist. Presented by Professor John Coppola, MFA, MA. Light reception will precede the lecture at 6:30pm.
