The Song is You! – Jazz Vocal Workshop Series at Hoff-Barthelson Music School

Jazz Vocalist MJ Territo Leads Three Friday Night Jazz Workshops

Back by popular request, Hoff-Barthelson Music School will host a special series of jazz vocal workshops with guest vocalist MJ Territo, on three consecutive Friday evenings, December 2, 9, and 16, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. The Song is You! – an Introduction to vocal jazz – is open to the public and free of charge. Jazz lovers of all ages are welcome to observe one or all three sessions at the School, located at 25 School Lane, Scarsdale, New York.

“Introducing music students to vocal jazz is very satisfying. I enjoy being able to give them a taste of the jazz repertoire, the intricacies of jazz harmony and improvisation, and the importance of jazz in the history of our country,” says Ms. Territo.

Some of the topics to be covered in the workshop series include:

  • What is the Jazz Vocal Repertoire?
  • Where Did Jazz Come From?
  • Ears: Your most important musical asset
  • Doo-be doo-ba: The basics of scat singing
  • Bandstand Behavior: Earning your place as a musician
  • Take My Lead: How and why to write a “neat sheet”
  • Woodshedding: How to dig into practicing jazz

About MJ Territo:
Jazz stylist MJ Territo performs regularly in venues throughout the tri-state area. In addition to leading the MJ Territo Quartet, she is also the founder of the Ladies Day Jazz Ensemble, a group of women jazz musicians dedicated to discovering and presenting rarely played compositions of jazz women. Their first CD, Ladies Day will be released in January 2017.

From her deep roots in writing and theatre, MJ sings with the words out front, choosing her two-hundred (and counting) song repertoire from the Great American Songbook, instrumental jazz compositions, rock, folk, pop, and world music. Beyond the lyrics, the songs she is drawn to have memorable melodies and tell some nugget of truth about life. Her first CD, Down with Love, was released in 2010.

When writing her own songs, it is the words that almost always come first. Even in her improvisations – with or without incorporating words – her focus is on telling a story. As a lyricist, MJ collaborates frequently with composers, and also pens words for instrumental jazz standards.

Ms. Territo is a Teaching Artist for ArtsWestchester as well as for Lifetime Arts, an organization that works to redefine aging through arts education. Her most recent creative aging offering was “Singing and Swinging: Adventures in Jazz, Blues and Improvisation”.
