The Puerto Rican Community Through Arts and Culture
“The Puerto Rican Community Through Arts and Culture”
On View: May 3 – June 9
Gallery Hours:
Wednesday – Friday, 12-5pm
Saturday, 12-6pm
Sunday, 12-5pm
This exhibit is an opportunity to explore the two extremes of Puerto Rico’s cultural identity. On one end of this spectrum is a Caribbean paradise full of beautiful sun-kissed people, easily accessible to most Americans through a short plane ride. On the other end is a diaspora of people who have experienced unprecedented challenges throughout history and who struggle to maintain their unique collective identity.
Most recently, hurricanes, earthquakes and the COVID-19 pandemic have negatively impacted the island. Inspired by these events, Puerto Rican artists are expressing the strength, resilience and power they have to affect change through their art and help to achieve respect, equality and justice for the eight million Puerto Ricans that live on the island and the United States. Support is made possible through long-standing community organizations that serve as resources to educate, mobilize and create awareness in the community.
The nonprofit Comité Noviembre celebrates Puerto Rican culture and the achievements of Puerto Ricans while also raising consciousness about the issues that affect Puerto Rican communities in the U.S. and on the island. Working with community partners, specifically the White Plains Puerto Rican Cultural Committee (WPPRCC) and the Puerto Rican Institute for the Development of the Arts (PRIDA), Comité Noviembre has developed this exhibit to showcase the struggles and victories of the Puerto Rican community through art.
