The Poetry of Place with Natasha Rao in person at HVWC
Place induces poetry—we often internalize a landscape, which can become a psychological overlay for how we see and experience the world. In this class, we’ll look at poems by writers such as Ada Limón, James Wright, Bhanu Kapil, Linda Gregg, Frank O’Hara, Monica Youn, and others that exist in a specific location, either situating the reader in one spot, or moving us through multiple spaces. We’ll discuss the role of place as it relates to feeling, atmosphere, and narrative, and will generate some location-specific drafts of our own.

Natasha Rao is the author of Latitude, which was selected by Ada Limón as the winner of the 2021 APR/Honickman First Book Prize. The recipient of a 2021 Ruth Lilly & Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation, she has also received fellowships from Bread Loaf, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Community of Writers. Her work appears in The Nation, American Poetry Review, The New York Times Magazine, The Yale Review, and elsewhere.
