The New Jazz Workshop was founded by Dezron Douglass and Lummie Spann with a group of like-minded young musicians dedicated to preserving the spirit of Jackie McLean in the present. The New Jazz Workshop’s recent CD Underground features four original compositions by Lummie Spann.

Lummie Spann grew up in Hartford, CT and enrolled in the music program at The Artists Collective, a community performing and visual arts school founded by legendary jazz saxophonist and educator the late Jackie McLean. Lummie’s high school ensemble won first place two years in a row at the Berklee High School Jazz Festival, where he also won the Judge’s Choice award, and he was the first performer to receive the Jackie McLean Fellowship awarded by theUniversity of Hartford. He also held the Betty Carter Artist Residency at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and is currently Assistant Professor at the Hartt School’s Jackie McLean Institute.  Lummie has performed with such jazz notables as Louis Hayes, Cyrus Chestnut, Steve Davis, Nat Reeves, Winard Harper, George Cables, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Jeremy Pelt, and the Curtis Brothers.

PJS Jazz Society presents the best in jazz every Second Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, September through April.  Opening set from 5:15-6:00 pm.  Two Headliner sets from 6:30-9:00 pm.  Concerts are held in a cabaret setting.  Additional parking available at the Holmes School (next to the First Presbyterian Church on Columbus Avenue).
