The Monumental Impact of Greek Art in Southern Italy and Beyond

Pausing for a few brief moments in the sun-drenched Mediterranean sun which gives southern Italy its nickname, il Mezzogiorno, one routinely may discover some ancient Doric columns, a temple dedicated to Athena or Hera, a nymphaeum, a necropolis, the remains of time-weathered Greek stone houses and ville, fragments of statuary and vases, jewelry and coins, and much, much more. These are all surviving witnesses of a remote era and culture which should not and cannot ever be forgotten. Magna Graecia is timeless; and its legacy is very much alive today even after almost three millennia. Accompany us as we survey and assess the ageless artistic contributions of the Italioti and Sicelioti – respectively the pre-Roman Greek colonists of the southern peninsula and Sicily – to ancient and modern civilizations. After this presentation, you may want to exclaim that everything is Greek to you, and indeed it is to all of us. Must register in advance and prepay. Member $20, Non-Members $25.
