The Longest Shortest Apprenticeship: On Writing Your First Book and Life After the MFA


What are the challenges and pleasures particular to grappling with a first long project, be it a novel or collection? The talk focuses on strategies to keep hold of a project’s initial spark while organizing and revising it over time, as well as the practicalities of sustaining creative momentum and community after the MFA.

Sophie McManus is the author of the novel The Unfortunates, published in 2015 by Farrar Strauss and Giroux. Her work has appeared in American Short Fiction, Memorious, Tin House, and other publications. She is a recipient of fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the Saltonstall Foundation, and the Jentel Foundation. She teaches writing and literature in Brooklyn, New York.
